Maria Montessori

The child can only  develop by means of experience in his environment. We call such experience work.
Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. She became the first woman Doctor of Medicine in Italy around 1897. In her work at the University of Rome’s psychiatric clinic, Dr. Montessori developed an interest in the treatment of children and for the rest of her life wrote and spoke on their behalf. Dr. Montessori first began to study mentally disabled children and then “normal” children from the city of Rome. Through her studies and interactions with the children, she developed material or work in which every child can learn. This material allows the child to learn through his senses. From her first school in Italy “Casa dei Bambini”, the Children’s House in Italian, to the thousands of Montessori schools world wide, her method is recognized and internationally known as successful. She was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and was an advocate for children until her death in 1952.
